BRINGING BIOPHILIC DESIGN PATTERNS TO THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Today, people continue to enlarge the cities they have built with the increasing population. As this growth continues, humanity is disconnecting itself more and more from nature daily. The impact of the built environment on human life cannot be ignored. Children are also adversely affected by this situation. Children living in the city grow up without experiencing nature adequately. However, the positive effects of the child-nature interaction on the cognitive and emotional development of children and its importance in the development of children have been clearly seen in various studies carried out to date. They spend more time indoors with a modern urban lifestyle. Unfortunately, due to rapidly increasing urbanization, children's interaction with nature is decreasing daily. In today's world, there are various methods for children, who have to spend more time indoors, to establish this interaction indoors. In the interiors designed with the concept of biophilic design, it has been understood in the light of the studies examined that the human-nature relationship and structure-nature relationships can be established. The aim of this study is to establish an understanding of bringing biophilic design patterns to the learning environment. Several literature studies and case studies examined and discussed learning environments, children-nature interaction, and biophilic design contexts. The study reveals the ability to interact with nature in the learning environment, where children spend the most time after their homes, with the help of design, and emphasizes a different perspective to designers in this direction.
