LIVRID OR GENTRIFIED? EXAMINATION OF SOCIO-CULTURAL SUSTAINABILITY IN THE CONTEXT OF HOUSING: A CASE STUDY OF GOLDEN HORN
 
Housing is of great important role in sustainability context in cities which is the important element for creation of the built environment. The sustainability issue in housing context has four dimensions which are environmental sustainability, socio-cultural sustainability, physical sustainability and economical sustainability. Despite of the fact that the sustainability issue has different aspects, they are like one chain’s rings which cannot be seperable. Within this context, this paper focuses on the aspects of culture, globalisation and the quality of life which are the focal points of the search and has of great importance on housing context in Istanbul. It concentrates on the socio-cultural parts of the sustainability context within housing issue while comparing the examples in Turkey and in the case study area which is the Golden Horn. While looking for sustainability issue in built environment, housing activities are the determinant factors for culture which directly influence on quality of life whereas the quality of life is the driving force for socio-cultural sustainability. Socio-cultural aspects of sustainability are the combination of social well-being such as pollution, traffic, noise, employment and density facts and culture issue such as social and personal identity which are the focal elements for measuring the environmental adaptation and for people to direct and manage their actions in the social, cultural, economical and political manner. Within the sustainable housing context, houses have been provided an environmentally friendly life for centuries with their environmentally and socio-culturally sustainable qualities. However, despite of the fact, today’s housing types diminishes the quality of life with elements such as high unemployment rate, informal growth of economy, land occupation, spread of slums, traffic congestion and pollution which are the main reasons for the loss of these values in houses which encompasses the personal attachments and cultural values. It is undeniable fact that these reasons were forced to replace by unhealthy urbanization, globalization and industrialization policies in the last century which affects socio-cultural sustainability in negative manner in Istanbul. From this point of view, in the paper, the relationship between socio-cultural aspects of sustainability and housing context in Turkey and the golden key of Istanbul which is Golden Horn will be investigated within the comparison of examples in housing and built environment context. The paper will divide in two parts which are environment-oriented investigation and people-oriented investigation. In people-oriented investigation part, is about understanding of people’s social well-beings such as who have house in Halic, in order to understand and measure the environmental adaptation of residents, or their job status or are they satisfied with their neighborhood or not. In environment-oriented investigation part will be about measuring the correlation between people’s social well-being in their neighborhood in order to analyzing deeply the age group classification, socio-cultural sustainability, and housing types. In this paper, it is aimed to focus on the places in where today’s houses and that houses’ neighborhoods stand together in order to examine which elements limit socio-cultural sustainability and the actions taking place towards sustainability in these places from past to present; how it confronts with the change, the reasons of these changes and their socio-cultural sustainability elements will be examined in the context of housing in Turkey and in the Golden Horn-Halic.
