PUBLIC SPACES IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS IN THE CONTEXT OF SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY: A CASE STUDY

Urban social sustainability is the ability of the city to offer livable conditions for human interaction and communication and cultural development in the long term. The potential of social sustainability in architecture is based on its strong relation to individuals and society. In this context, the study investigates the effect of public spaces on social sustainability, as one of the most important spatial assets of the urban space. It is observed that the qualities of the public space correspond to the goals and concepts in the social sustainability agenda. The study aims to reveal the basic components and contributions of public spaces, which are one of the main actors of community and social life, in providing social sustainability within the scope of residential areas. As a result of the comprehensive literature study, the indicators of social sustainability were determined through the scope of the architecture and public space. Accessibility, social infrastructure (social facilities, and open spaces), attachment, neighborliness, safety, and participation were identified as the primary components of public spaces in residential areas in influencing social sustainability. A questionnaire survey is applied to two areas in Karşıyaka, Izmir. The data was examined through factor analysis and correlation analysis. The research findings show that there are several positive relationships between the indicators of public spaces in residential areas and social sustainability, as well as some latent variables, which are perceived in more depth by the participants as main components.
