THE COMPARISON OF THE URBAN REGENERATION OF CHICAGO AND İSTANBUL
 
Intruduction: In the study, the comparison of the urban regeneration of Chicago and İstanbul is searched about. Firstly, history of these two cities are mentioned. Then, the milestones affecting the urban regeneration of the Chicago city is determined. The most important factor that affected Chicago’s history is determined to be ‘The Great Chicago Fire’ becouse of this disaster’s negative and unforgetable impacts on the city. After this disaster the city had to be rebuilt, the results of urban regeneration are searched across Chicago. Also, urban regeneration of İstanbul is searched about and a pilot area is selected to analyze the affects of the increase in housing constructions in İstanbul. The selected pilot area was Esenyurt becouse Esenyurt is one of the most important districts developing in İstanbul. The reason why Esenyurt is important is the density of the district’s building and population which has been showing a significant increase in recent years. In the district of Esenyurt, information was recieved that both the old settlements and new settlements exist together. The hypothesis of the study is that in Chicago only urban regeneration took place, whereas in İstanbul both urban regeneration and urban transformation took place. Aim: The aim of the study is to work on the urban regeneration of Chico and İstanbul. Study is made about the evolution of architecture, tourism, economy, city planning and transportation of Chicago after the ‘Chicago Fire’.The aim of the study is to examine the urban regeneration of the city historically. A field survey is made in pilot region of İstanbul. Two housing projects are chosen; one from the old settlement and one from the new settlement of Esenyurt. It is aimed to prove that urban regeneration takes place in old settlements and urban transformation takes place in new settlements. Results of the regeneration and transformation are searched across the district of Esenyurt. The hypothesis of the study is that only urban regeneration took place in Chicago, whereas both urban regeneration and urban transformation took place in İstanbul. Content: In the study, the urban regeneration of İstanbul and Chicago is searched about. New and old settlements in the district is experienced and field survey is made. In the field survey, it was aimed to prove that urban regeneration takes place in old settlements and urban transportation takes place in new settlements. The demographic data of buildings, population and the zoning are mentioned. Also, factors affecting districts’s urban development are searched about and modern housing projects that are built in Esenyurt are mentioned. Constraints: In the study, the concepts mentioned in the study are defined. While examining the historical dimensions of the cities selected as pilot region in the study, the limits to be reached by quantitative data are excluded. In this qualitative study carried out on social sciences, comparative research was carried out. Method: The method of the study is comparative research method. Within the scope of this method, literature review and examination of selected examples are made. The urban regeneration of Chico and İstanbul are examined. The evolution of architecture, tourism, economy, city planning and transportation of Chicago are described. A field survey is made in pilot region of İstanbul. Two housing projects are chosen; one from the old settlement and one from the new settlement of Esenyurt. It is aimed to prove that urban regeneration takes place in old settlements and urban transformation takes place in new settlements. Results of the regeneration and transformation are searched across the district of Esenyurt. Findings: In the study, the comparison of the urban regeneration of Chicago and İstanbul is searched about. In the scope of the study, history of the cities are mentioned. In Chicago’s history, the milestones affecting the urban regeneration of the city is determined. The results of urban regeneration are searched across Chicago. Also, urban regeneration of İstanbul is searched about and a pilot area is selected to analyze the affects of the increase in housing constructions in İstanbul. This selected pilot area was Esenyurt district becouse of it’s rapid change and development. New and old settlements in the district is experienced and field survey is made. Conclusion: In the field survey, it was aimed to prove that urban regeneration takes place in old settlements and urban transformation takes place in new settlements. The hypothesis of the study is that in Chicago only urban regeneration took place, whereas in İstanbul both urban regeneration and urban transformation took place. As a conlusion of this study, the hypothesis was proven to be correct.
