Various conservation methods have been developed for the conservation of historical buildings which are considered as the common heritage of the whole world. It is know that the adaptive reuse which is one of these methods has been used for conserving historical buildings. For this reason, “adaptive reuse” is suggested for sustainable conservation of historical buildings. In this study, it is aimed to draw attention to useful and harmful uses of adaptive reuse and to increase awareness for effects of new use on buildings. The method used in the study is expected to enlighten architectures who prepare adaptive reuse projects. It was examined whether new use of five historical buildings chosen for this reason could harm the values of the buildings or not. Four different criteria were dealt with for examining the effects of new use on buildings as historical buildings’ age value, evidential value, artistic (aesthetic) value and authentic value. These criteria for each building were graded from one point to five points according to conservation levels. According to the data gathered, two of the buildings were ill-conserved, one of them were conserved in an average level and two were well-conserved. Why the buildings having conservation problem faced such problem and how well-conserved buildings were approached in adaptive reuse were scrutinized in the extent of the study.
