TIME, SPACE AND SUSTAINABILITY RELATIONSHIP: URBAN MEMORY PLACES

Urban way of life, social structure and the environment generated by the social structure are important in the formation of places with special characteristics with regard to urban and social sustainability. Urban public places are important identity forming spaces for cities since they are significant reference points that form bonds between the past and the present. Due to the socio-cultural, political and economic changes that took place in recent years, cities undergo a rapid transformation and get more homogeneous with the passing of time, while places lose their identity formed by the natural and cultural structure thereby losing their memory. Places of memory that have left their mark on the experiences of individuals are defined as complementary to the social sense of belonging, the city, the urbanity consciousness and urban culture. Urban public places are those that especially have witnessed historical events where collective urban memory is more intense. Collective memory continues to exist as the physical holds onto the symbolic thereby reaching a form of permanence even if the places change over time. This permanence may be provided in many elements that are both spatial and present in the place from the scale of structure to that of region. The objective of the study is to emphasize the components of urban space, the spatial elements that generate urban identity and their meanings in urban memory. In conclusion, the guiding impact of urban memory places in urban design guides and future urban landscape designs have been put forth.
