AN ASSESSMENT OF THE EXISTENCE OF HEALING GARDEN PRINCIPLES IN UNESCO-REGISTERED PERSIAN GARDENS

Nature has always been considered a platform and source of inspiration for mankind. Although people have used nature for a variety of purposes, it is evident that they seek health and well-being primarily in nature. Healing gardens are such therapeutic areas designed to promote the health and well-being of man and his environment. Persian garden is a unique landscape model with a great history as a result of Iranian man's interaction with nature. The aim of this study was to investigate the elements of healing gardens in Persian gardens through descriptive and study-based case studies of nine ancient Persian gardens registered in UNESCO. In this context, the design principles of the healing garden were discussed and compared with the features of Persian gardens. What Al-RISH (1999) proposed as garden therapy refers to the various features of the garden that have the ability to improve recovery from stress and also have other positive effects on patients, staff and visitors. The book Healing Garden identifies six main design principles of the healing garden: variety of space, a predominance of green space, encourage physical activity, positive distraction, minimization of intrusion, and reduction of ambiguity. It seems that these design principles are also found in Persian gardens. An extensive study of Persian gardens has revealed some unique features such as unity, hierarchy, symmetry, centrality, rhythm and harmony, multiplicity in unity and unity in multiplicity and naturalism. It can be concluded that all six design principles of the healing gardens can be found in some way in the ancient Persian gardens. Therefore, Persian gardens can be used as modern healing gardens that have a significant therapeutic effect on the patients’ health.
