MINIMALIST APPROACH IN CONTEMPORARY MOSQUE INTERIORS

The reflection of minimalist thinking in art and architecture corresponds to a design approach that is free from excessive forms, ornaments and too much use of color. The minimalism movement, which first emerged in the 60’s, maintains its currency and popularity today. The daily crowded chaos surrounding modern people has increased people's interest in minimalism over time. The minimalist approach is frequently used indoors to create the calm and stress-free spaces that people need. Mosques are also one of the building types where the users most need serenity. Designing the interiors of the place of worship in neutral tones as much as possible, with less materials, free from distractive ornaments will make it easier to focus on worship. In addition, the concept of minimalist living is in harmony with Islam. Buildings designed with a minimalist approach are in harmony with the understanding of Islam that avoids waste and glorifies the modest lifestyle. In the mosque buildings built in recent years, interior spaces are designed in a minimalist way with this understanding. The aim of this study is to put forward the effect of minimalist design approach on contemporary mosque interiors through examples. In this study, the interiors of eight contemporary mosques built in different countries between 2012 and 2021 were examined how the minimalist design approach reflected on the interior of mosques. The most prominent design elements were unadorned interior components, wide white colored surfaces, concrete walls, minimalist shaped mihrab and minbar designs in this scope of the work.
