URBAN AGRICULTURAL APPLICATIONS IN THE CASE OF ORTAHÝSAR TRABZON

Agriculture and the (primitive) city have become a whole with the first people who settled down to build their settlements around areas suitable for agriculture. Over time, with the industrial revolution and various developments, the dynamics of cities have changed, and the concepts of urban and rural areas have emerged by leaving the agriculture out of the city. While urban areas are defined as areas within the boundaries of the city administrative unit that have lost their rural character, rural areas are defined as areas whose production activities are based on agriculture. However, the expansion of cities towards rural areas for the increasing spatial needs with the urbanization process and the intertwining of urban and rural areas have developed new concepts about agricultural production. Innovations in agricultural production forms and the concept of urban agriculture have enabled agricultural activities to be implemented in urban areas again. Although urban agricultural activities emerged to provide solutions to economic and political crises in the past, they are becoming widespread today to respond to the demand for access to safe, economical and healthy food. Urban agriculture has the potential to provide solutions to environmental problems as well as many social, spatial and economic problems faced by settlements. The aim of this study is to determine suitable areas for urban agricultural activities that will allow the public to access safe and economical food in the Ortahisar district of Trabzon province. In the study, firstly, the concept of urban agriculture was explained, then the appropriate criteria were determined as a result of the literature review, and the appropriate areas were determined with the help of geographic information systems. As a result, it has been revealed that 9% of the 218 km2 area is highly suitable, 26.6% is moderately suitable, 5% is permanent and 43.6% is currently unsuitable.
