EXTERNAL EARTHQUAKE STRENGTHENING OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BUILDINGS AND AESTHETICAL EFFECTS

Reinforcement of reinforced concrete buildings against earthquakes is carried out only by civil engineers. Retrofitting of reinforced concrete structures results in alteration in internal spaces. Strengthening applications effects the architecture of the building. The function and aesthetical alterations are also important for owners or users. On the other hand strengthening applications are only done by civil engineers and generally architectural points are ignored. The contribution of architects in retrofit projects is very limited. The strengthening applications also creates secondary expenses. The renovation of internal finishings create huge economical problems. Also internal strengthening applications results in long time constructions. In this study, a reinforcement method that can be applied from outside the building, which improves the aesthetic appearance of the building and does not disturb the internal spaces in the earthquake strengthening of reinforced concrete buildings is introduced. In this approach, steel frames to be formed outside the building will be fixed to the existing building and will contribute to the earthquake resistance. In this study, the changes that will occur in the building image after the proposed application are discussed. A sample or model building is designed and external steel strengthening is applied. External visual evaluations before and after strengthening are obtained and compared.
