Planning for sustainable places does not only involve giving planning and design decisions but it is a long-term living process comprehending all levels of the community as well as the natural resources. This multi-dimensionality of the landscapes and the complexity of land use planning make it difficult to implement ideas and decisions. These complexities naturally vary according to each community giving us the necessity to examine them in detail. In this study, 4 case studies from Syracuse, NY are examined and a qualitative study is conducted in order to understand the barriers, limitations, opportunities and strengths they face in implementing land use plans to achieve sustainable communities. Furthermore, in this research, it is attempted to answer questions regarding the factors that local governments deal with when planning for sustainable communities and it is aimed to explain the underlying reasons that affect the implementation process of land use planning.
