RISK ASSESSMENT OF HISTORICAL MASONRY STRUCTURES, CASE STUDY: ÇARDAK CARAVANSERAI IN DENİZLİ
 
The evaluation of historical masonry buildings are significant in terms of transferring our cultural heritage to future generations. The conservation of these masonry buildings is possible through investigating problems and their causes with tools such as risk analysis, repair and strengthening. The situation is important in terms of conserving the architectural heritage in historical buildings. In this study, state classification and risk assessment were applied to ensure the sustainability of historic masonry structures. Çardak caravanserai in Denizli was chosen as the case study since it has preserved its authenticity and integrity. Built in 1230, Çardak Khan was used for different functions until the first half of the 20th century and was abandoned in the 1960s. The monument has been damaged and endangered by vandalism. First, information on cultural heritage was recorded for symptoms. Then the symptoms were defined for the structure and divided into three condition classes according to the physical condition of the building. In this context, the architectural, structural and material properties of the caravanserai have been defined. Risk assessment has been performed on the monument, which is classified based on structural deterioration. As a result, the principles of monitoring the current conservation status of masonry structures and intervention recommendations have been presented for the sustainability of the building and its transfer to future generations.
