THE EFFECT OF THE THERMAL INERTIA ON THE THERMAL BEHAVIOR OF BUILDING STONE WALL IN SEMI-ARID CLIMATE

The building sector is the first energy consumption in Algeria. The building envelope works as interface for harsh climate conditions. In the semi-arid climate, construction materials have an active role in the energy performance of building. Thermal inertia associated with thick walls contributes to reducing the energy consumption and improving the interior thermal comfort of building. This paper aims to study the effect of thermal inertia on the thermal performance of stone walls with same thickness and different layers ; wall of stone , wall of stone and internal thermal insulation (ITI), wall of stone and external thermal insulation (ETI), taking into consideration the climatic characteristics. A numerical simulation with the building energy performance and simulation and environmental analysis software “Autodesk ECOTECT Analysis” used in this research to understand and evaluate the thermal behavior of building stone wall in Tébessa region (Algeria). The results of this paper show that the stone wall with external thermal insulation (ETI) proved its thermal performance better than the stone wall of the same thickness, the internal thermal insulation (ITI) eliminates the effect of the thermal inertia, the stone wall thickness and the thermal insulation affects the thermal inertia, therefore the thermal performance of the building.
